Block Diagram

Energy Saver is fixed to a switching point/ service connection and is connected wirelessly to a computer/ web

Communication Module

It has a GSM/GPRS modem which communicates to the Control System (microcontroller). All the information from/to the Control System are sent to/from the Remote Control Station via encrypted data packets through GSM.

Control Module

An intelligent microcontroller analyzes the data received and controls the Energy Saver system. It controls switching ON/OFF and maintains the set optimized voltage to the lamps.

Energy Saving Module

Highly efficient toroidal transformers (>97% efficiency) are used for saving energy which is achieved by optimizing voltage at pre-defined timings.

The choice of Toroidal transformer with different voltage level tapings is vital in achieving the following objectives:

  • Higher Electrical Efficiency - Above 97%,
  • Low Stray Magnetic fields - not affecting any of the electronic components,
  • Low Mechanical Noise (Hum) - not affecting any switching components.
  • Reduced No Load Losses increasing the efficiency of the system.
  • Operates under wide range of Relative Humidity (0% - 100%) enabling installation anywhere irrespective of weather conditions.
  • No Harmonics : Perfect reproduction of the input waveform.
  • No moving parts thereby increasing operating life and reducing maintenance of the system.

SMART© Streetlighting Solution - Overview

Schnell SMART© system for streetlighting is designed to gain complete control over operation, monitoring and sophisticated maintenance of each and every individual streetlight. The solution consists of a control gear network which include a SMART© web server, GSM/GPRS based gateways (LumiHub) at switching points and RF Mesh network based nodes (LumiNodes) for accessing individual lamps.

LumiHub

LumiHub acts as a gateway between each lamp and the SMART© web server. It creates the mesh network with the LumiNodes in each streetlight pole, aggregates the data from them and sends it to the web server via GSM/GPRS connection. LumiHub has the following features
  • It can connect to and collect data from a maximum of 255 nodes
  • It has an built-in Class 1.0 ISI Energy Meter for monitoring electrical parameters
  • It has the possibility for group ON/OFF control based on a pre-programmed schedule or remotely from SMART web interface
  • Sends alert notification for failure events
  • Complete automatic protection and rectification for temporary short circuits

LumiNode

LumiNode is the individual streetlight controller. It connects to the LumiHub and extends the mesh network by connecting to the other LumiNodes in its vicinity. It is the terminal that monitors and controls the streetlight. The following are the features of LumiNode

Installation and Boot-up

The installation procedure for the "Lumi" devices is a simple plug and play. The LumiHub is programmed to send data to the SMART server as and when powered ON. Also the list of LumiNodes under a particular LumiHub is programmed too. Once these two details are in the LumiHub, it creates a network as and when it is powered up. A green LED in the device blinks when the network is up. The LumiNodes in the programmed list is now able to join this network, and there can be a bidirectional communication between the LumiHub and the LumiNode. A blue LED in the LumiHub and LumiNode blinks when there is a data communication between the two. The LumiHub collects the data and transfers it to the SMART web server which can be seen via the web portal.

The product serves as a Remote Data/Parameter monitoring for Solar panel integrated streetlighting system. The Solar panel assisted streetlighting system consists of a Solar panel, a battery charging through the Solar panel or through the Mains supply, if the voltage from the solar panel is not sufficient for charging. The product senses and records the following parameters of the system
  • Solar Panel Voltage
  • Battery Voltage
  • Charging Mode (either through Mains or through Solar panel)
  • Charging currents (in both modes)
  • Load current
  • Load Status
The product includes a GSM/GPRS modem to communicate these parameters to a remote monitoring station either on request or automatically. The product also provides a remote control facility for switching ON/OFF the load. The block diagram of the monitoring system is given below. The block diagram has two main blocks namely the functional block (upper block) and the monitoring block (lower block). The Data Lines and Power Lines are indicated separately.

Monitoring Station

The Monitoring system consists of a microcontroller which senses the above said parameters and reports it to central monitoring station via the GSM/GPRS module either on request from the central station or automatically based on the preset timing. It also includes a real time clock to keep track of the time. It can also be used for switching ON/OFF the load based on the preset timing from the central monitoring station.  

Specification for Remote Controller

  • The remote controller should be capable of the following functions:
  • Provide the live status data on request from the central station
  • Provide the recorded status data as a daily report to the central station based on a predefined timing
  • Should switch ON/OFF the load based on the preset timing
  • Configurable timings for sending the report, switching ON/OFF the device, automatic LIVE status interval

Specification for Central Monitoring System

  • The central monitoring station should be capable of the following functions
  • Command to get live status from the remote controller
  • Command to get the programmed ON/OFF time status, Reporting time status, Automatic Live interval time status from the remote controller
  • Command to Switch ON/OFF the load instantaneously
  • Provision to add, delete and modify the device information in the database
  • Daily, Weekly and Monthly reports
